Resting Metabolic Rate

Resting Metabolic Rate

The Nutrition Center @ CSU within the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition uses state-of-the-art equipment to obtain your resting metabolic rate.

What is Resting Metabolic Rate?
Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) is the amount of energy (calories) burned when you are at rest. These are the Calories needed for keeping the cells in your body’s organs functioning while you are resting quietly in a reclined comfortable position. An adult’s RMR typically decreases with age, which is one of the reasons why it is often easier to gain weight and more difficult to lose weight as one gets older.

Why is it important to know your RMR?
Your RMR typically accounts for the majority (65-75%) of your total daily Calorie expenditure, so knowing this value provides useful information about how many Calories you burn during the day, which relates to energy balance and body weight and body fat. Once RMR is measured, we can determine how many additional calories you need to account for your activities of daily living and for exercise, and how to adjust these and your Calorie intake if you want to gain or lose weight. RMR is a valuable measurement to know!

How is RMR measured?
The method used in the Nutrition Center @ CSU to measure RMR is called calorimetry. This involves measuring how much oxygen you use and how much carbon dioxide you produce while lying comfortably in a quiet environment. These values correlate directly with your energy expenditure. While your resting metabolic rate can be estimated using mathematical formulas, there is considerable variation among humans and the actual measurement of your RMR is obviously more accurate. You will be asked to fast overnight and rest quietly once you arrive. A clear plastic bubble hood will be draped over your head to measure your respiratory gases. The test is painless and requires about one hour from your arrival to departure.

The easy, non-invasive assessment includes a complete follow-up report and recommendations to help you achieve your goals.
